Ndlovu: A rising star

Dion Ndlovu

ART depictions and sculpting in the motherland has existed since time immemorial, dating as far back as the early 13th century during the era of the Caveman.

Wall murals and reliefs were used as a form of communication, conservation and beautifying in ancient Egypt, every generation had its own standout artist.

Fast forward to 2025, Zimbabwean illustrator Dion Ndlovu has emerged as a notable artist.

He showcased his debut nine-piece exhibition at Alliance Française in Bulawayo this past weekend and exclusively invited NewsDay Life & Style.

“This past weekend’s collection was titled No Fear of Judgement, so I was showcasing something that I made based on my expressionism type of art,” Ndlovu said.

“So these are pieces that had to do with sadness, happiness and rage. Yesterday, was my first solo exhibition and the turnout was great because we had up to 90 people coming through.”

He added: “I had a whole year to prepare for the exhibition. It was a success, the vibe was good and the ambiance was great.

“To anyone who came to see my work, I want to say thank you. I am looking forward to more art and better exhibitions.”

Ndlovu gained public attention in 2023 when President Emmerson Mnangagwa posed for a photo holding two portraits of himself, which were drawn by the artist.

The 21-year-old was born and raised in Bulawayo.

He is currently studying for a National Diploma in Fine Art at Bulawayo Polytechnic.

The digital sculptor has been making art professionally for the past three years, during which he worked with a number of people.

Some of the people he worked with include Denim Woods, for his Njuga album cover and recently while making the Sirius album cover for Suhn.

He collaborated with a few South Africa-based artists to create amazing works of art like Samurai Farai and Ndumiso Hlophe.

Ndlovu makes amazing art pieces and share them on his Instagram handle @whoisdion_.
