Littering clogging city’s drainage systems

BULAWAYO residents have been warned against littering to prevent the clogging of drainage systems.

Rains, which pounded Bulawayo recently, exposed the city's poor storm drainage system as evidenced by roads being waterlogged

During a Ward 9 Bulawayo Residents Association  meeting, locals urged the municipality to clear the clogged drainage systems.

“Can you outsource labour to clear the drainage systems for the network  to properly function and for rainwater to flow easily,” said one resident during the meeting.

Bulawayo United Residents Association chairperson, Winos Dube, said residents were also to blame.

“While we are appealing to the council to clear clogged drainage systems, residents should also stop being careless by littering in trenches which is what is clogging the drains,” Dube said.

“This is a shared responsibility between residents and the local authority.”

Blocked drainage systems are causing artificial floods in the streets, exposing residents to water-borne diseases and road accidents

Bulawayo is prone to flash floods during rainy seasons due to poor drainage systems especially in the old locations.
