The Hwange Local Board (HLB) has intensified its efforts to curb littering and illegal dumping of waste in the coal mining town by designating May as its month of cleanliness.
HLB chairperson councillor Morrison Mafa said the culture of littering in Hwange had reached alarming levels.
Mafa said the amount of litter by the roadsides suggested that most motorists and passengers were in the habit of throwing litter off moving vehicles.
“The amount of littering in Hwange urban is so scary,” he said. “We have some areas that have turned into an eyesore due to illegal waste dumping and as council we don’t condone such behaviour and call upon our people to discard such an unscrupulous culture.
“The amount of litter by the roadsides is a clear indication that people are throwing rubbish from moving vehicles.
“Not only does this practice pollute our environment but it can likely lead to accidents as litter flying from a car in the front might disrupt the one that is following it.”
Mafa added: “Some unscrupulous individuals throw rubbish anywhere without thinking about the consequences of their actions.
“Many people do not realise or underestimate the negative impact of littering.”
