Upmarket memorial park for war veterans

“With the assistance of the government, we plan to repatriate these heroes and heroines, and provide them with a dignified final resting place in Zimbabwe.”

HARARE, Jan 27 (NewsDayLive) - The Memories of Zimbabwe's Armed Struggle Trust (MOZAST) have partnered with the Watervlei Burial Park to set up a state-of-the-art cemetery for a diverse pool of citizens who contributed, in various ways, to the country’s liberation struggle.

While the National Heroes Acre in the capital and similar shrines across provinces serve as places to bury selected war heroes as well as outstanding citizens, the Watervlei Burial Park will provide "dignified burial spaces" for a diverse pool of individuals who fought for the country’s freedom from white minority rule.

“As part of this collaboration, Watervlei Burial Park has reserved a special section, the War Veterans Memorial Garden, to provide dignified burial spaces for these national heroes,” said MOZAST representative Richard Chirongwe.

“This initiative reflects MOZAST's respect and gratitude for the sacrifices made by Zimbabwe's war veterans, and MOZAST is committed to ensuring that their contributions to Zimbabwe's freedom are never forgotten.”

Located 11 kilometers from the Harare central business district along the Seke Road, the proposed memorial garden will be constructed on roughly 200 acres of land. It will have mausoleums, cremation and embalming centres, and a range of other services.

“A key feature of the War Veterans Memorial Garden will be a war museum, which will showcase the history of Zimbabwe's liberation war. (It) will serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Zimbabwe's freedom fighters,” Chirongwe said.

He added that the project, which has received full approval from the City of Harare for land usage and burials and will be replicated in other cities starting with Bulawayo, will facilitate repatriation of the remains of freedom fighters currently buried on foreign soil.

“With the assistance of the government, we plan to repatriate these heroes and heroines, and provide them with a dignified final resting place in Zimbabwe.”
