BY CHIEDZA MAZHANGARA Mister Africa Zimbabwe director Tapiwanashe Rubaya has made history by becoming the first local to be nominated for Namibia’s Katutura Fashion Week Awards penciled for November this year.
The Katutura Fashion Week is a Namibian platform that recognises and awards contributors to the fashion industry across the continent.
Rubaya’s nomination is for the Best Media of The Year under the Fashion and Modelling section for his African-Euro Asian fashion and modelling stories posted on his Fashion Inspirations Blog.
“When I was informed by the founder of the awards about the nomination, I did not take it seriously until I saw the logo of the blog when the list of nominations was published,” he told NewsDay Life & Style.
“This nomination proves that my fashion inspirations are, indeed, telling the stories of fashion to the world.”
Rubaya’s interest is mainly in male fashion, though sometimes he delves into the female fashion.
“I believe the male stories are not being told much when it comes to the fashion industry, compared to the ladies.
“A large percentage of stories being told are about women though not wrong, but we need to have equality,” he explained.

Commenting on the local fashion and modelling industry, Rubaya indicated that Zimbabweans involved in these two sectors are united, but funding was a major let down.
“I believe this sector is tight, given the economic issue, it has not been easy as fashion shows are declining due to lack of finances to conduct more shows,” he said.
