Afro-dancehall musician Licqua drops video on GBV

Through his music, Licqua shares his own experiences and those of others, shedding light on the often-overlooked issue of GBV against men.

MEET Marondera-based afro-dancehall and reggae musician, Happymore Charwadza, affectionately known as Licqua, whose mission is to shatter the silence surrounding Gender-Based Violence (GBV) against men.

With his powerful voice and poignant lyrics, Licqua is breaking barriers and challenging societal norms to create a safer, more inclusive space for all.

The talented musician recently dropped a music video titled Mukwende in which he encourages men to stand against GBV perpetrated on them.

Through his music, Licqua shares his own experiences and those of others, shedding light on the often-overlooked issue of GBV against men.

The video track was done in collaboration with renowned musician Mr Attention of the Gore Richitanga fame.

"The video track is against GBV against men. It is an encouraging video song that I did with passion, having seen that men are suffering in silence," Licqua told NewsDay Life & Style.

In the song, the husky-voiced musician is heard advising men to make decisions to free themselves from abusive relationships hence the part ...wototakura mukwende (carry your bags and leave).

"GBV against men is real and as a musician, I thought it wise to escalate the campaign against it. Men should not suffer in silence and endure pain in abusive marriages or relationships," said Licqua.

The video of the song was shot in both Harare and the farming town of Marondera.

Who is Licqua?

Licqua (38) is a reggae musician who started his music career at a tender age.

"I started as a musician while at Odzi High School. I was in the school choir and after leaving, that is when I thought of pursuing music," he said.

"It was not an easy journey but I had to pursue it, even today, I still face a lot of challenges but that will not deter me from realising my dream."

Licqua is also famous for the tracks Rudo and Musha WeNherera released a few years ago.

As a reggae musician, Licqua has held live shows in and out of Marondera.

"I am happy that my latest project Mukwende is doing well judging by the several views it is attracting on YouTube. I engaged Mr Attention so that I learn a lot since he has been in this game for a long. It worked."

Licqua said he drew inspiration from renowned local musicians Tocky Vibes and Andy Muridzo.
