Truck FM N3.N1: Taking radio to a trucking level

DJ Sokyo

THE monstrous wheels and steel scares anyone driving next to them.

They snake around trekking the lengths and breaths of the country making deliveries.

At times, they have to cross into neighbouring countries or even beyond transporting goods, from cement, to steel products, mine equipment,  and granite, among others.

It is an arduous task making those deliveries.

And to make up for the long trips, truckers have devised a plan to kill the boredom that accompanies them along their long trips.

Using smartphones and apps like Remix DJ to produce a makeshift studio, a group of truckers dotted around South Africa and Zimbabwe have come up with their own online radio station.

With a diverse team of DJs, including women, Truck FM N3.N1 broadcasts 24/7.

Haulers from all corners of the region take turns spinning tracks, sharing stories and connecting with listeners from Johannesburg to Harare.

Truck FM N3.N1 has become a beloved community.

“It is more than just a radio station and we welcome anyone with the gift and passion,” DJ Sokyo told NewsDay Life & Style.

DJs on deck are free to use diverse languages such as Afrikaans, English, Shona, Swahili, Nyanja, Zulu, Ndebele and Chewa.

During shows, drivers share tales of the road, offering advice and support to the listeners.

“We also make sure we engage with the audience always, because that is how we grow as a station,” said DJ Sokyo.

“We are growing each day and currently, we have about 20 DJs.”

Truck FM N3.N1 brings non-stop entertainment to the open roads of South Africa and Zimbabwe, with DJ Honda Fit and DJ Doctor hosting the Friday Sungura Selection, while DJ King Yadah takes the audience through Kudzora Nekudzura Ndangariro.

DJ Fidel Castro’s Rudziyakamwe keeps the audience grooving.

Other popular shows are DJ Dan Gaga’s Non-Stop Dance Parties, DJ Rachility’s Sassy R&B Vibes, DJ Tashy’s Electrifying Mixes and Mufundisi T Goremusandu’s uplifting gospel tunes on Gospel 365.

And on October 4, Truck FM N3.N1 will be hosting a get-together party in South Africa, where everyone is invited.
