‘School is not easy, but getting educated is better’

Author Kudakwashe Muganu believes that education is a basic foundation that stimulates the mind and helps people think more clearly and make informed decisions.

GETTING up early, meeting deadlines for assignments, handling homework and putting up with strict teachers are some of the aspects of the academic experience that many students find annoying.

While dropping out of school might seem like a good idea in these circumstances, author Kudakwashe Muganu believes that education is a basic foundation that stimulates the mind and helps people think more clearly and make informed decisions.

He expresses this in his most recent book titled Who Does Not Want to Quit School? The most important lesson to be learned from the book is that investing in education now will pay off handsomely down the road.

NewsDay Weekender Life & Style caught up with Muganu to discuss his writing career, inspiration that led to the writing of his latest book, highs and lows of his career, among other things.

About the author

I am 28 years old. In addition to being an author, I am an entrepreneur, philanthropist, life coach and motivational speaker.

I read a lot by nature. This is a habit that I picked up early in life. I read almost every day, basically. It could be the Bible, newspapers, magazines, novels, self-help books, biographies or autographs of someone, documentaries or anything that has positive information that can add value to my life.

I published my first book titled The Power of Wisdom and Who Does Not Want to Quit School? is my second project.

Subjects explored in his works

I take pleasure in penning self-development books and motivational articles because they enrich, educate and improve the lives of others.

I am not a comedian or entertainer. Rather, my assignment is to help others achieve greatness by helping them overcome obstacles in life or reach their own goals.

Response from the readers/critics

The feedback is encouraging. I have two awards under my belt which are; Upcoming Influential Writer of the Year (2022) and Zimbabwe Achievers Awards Author of the Year (2023).

It really shows that people are appreciating my work, supporting my vision and they can see that there is light in it.

Inspiration behind Who Does Not Want to Quit School?

If we are to be honest, school is not easy, putting up with the different seasons of the year, homework, getting up early, being on time and abiding by the rules.

However, there is more that education can offer no matter how much one feels the need to give up. Education positively impacts how people think.

While attending the University of South Africa two years ago, I noticed that many students lacked the patience to wait until the end of their academic programme.

Some were quitting school, to pursue their hustle because it seemed like a simpler route to making money.

After dropping out of school, some young people end up taking destructive paths such as drug and substance abuse, gangsterism, grooving everyday and teenage pregnancies which eventually lead them to the graveyard early due to sexually-transmitted infections and other health-related complications caused by alcohol abuse and smoking. Others commit crimes and get locked up in prison, while others end up committing suicide.

The book’s most important lesson is that education is an investment that people can make now and reap the rewards of later in life.

Obstacles along the journey

Being an upcoming author is not an easy journey. It is a lonely road that requires patience, courage and commitment.

Writing consumes time. I was struggling to find time to write this book because I juggle a lot of activities at the same time.

Writing books or articles at midnight became my go-to tactic.

Projects in the pipeline

I am working on another book which I hope to release early next year.

I am also honing and perfecting my craft in order so that I can appeal to the international market.
