Alliance Française celebrates three urban sports entry into Olympics

The sports, skateboarding, BMX and break dancing, will feature for the first time in the Olympics which runs from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France.

FANNY Gauthier, the director for Alliance Française, recently hosted guests in a celebration after three urban sports found in Zimbabwe will debut at the 2024 Olympics.

The sports, skateboarding, BMX and break dancing, will feature for the first time in the Olympics which runs from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France.

In addition to break dancing, Paris 2024 will be the third time for France to host Olympics which include other popular sports like surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing, which have best appealed to younger audiences,” Gauthier said.

“May 26 marks exactly two months before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Alliance Française is celebrating the urban sports that recently made their Olympic debut: skateboarding, BMX and break dancing. We chose to focus on these urban sports that are quite new in the Olympics Games.

“We chose to focus on these three sports so that they become a bit known. For example, athletic, gymnastics and swimming are well known.  Zimbabwe has got abundant talent in the three urban sports skateboarding, BMX and break dancing which is convincingly mature for the Olympics.”

He added that a good sport should have clear rules for a jury to decide on the winner.

It is also commonly understood that a good sport or game should have a goal and a set of rules that are responsible for the outline of the game.

The layout helps to co-ordinate competition for thinking and physical approaches and advances to the games.

The Olympic games were polished up over the years and now have a well-defined set of rules and governing boards.

Award-winning muralist Leeroy Brittan aka BOW (Black or White) and his companion Terrence Ndebele stunned the audience with their hip-hop rendition of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Break-dancers, skaters and BMX riders took turns to stun the audience.

A mixed DJ session wrapped up the day with the audience singing along and dancing to some funky beats.

A saxophonist added flavour through improvising melodies to highly compacted heart beat shacking instrumentals.

Branding expert Tichaona Bangure said the event, which was dubbed Urban Olympics — Street Edition Harare 2024, was so inspirational that he would like to take the challenge of designing Zimbabwean ethnic prints and branded T-shirts in support of the Olympics.

Ringisai Mapondera, the chef de mission for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, confirmed that Team Zimbabwe is more than ready for Olympics in spite of Zimbabwe not fielding competitors in skateboarding, BMX and break dancing.
