BUDDING Zimdancehall artiste Gabriel “Admiral General” Chimene says his music seeks to inspire men to be brave enough to speak out on societal issues and not suffer in silence.
The Sunningdale-based singer’s music carries several themes that include poverty, depression, drug addiction and teenage pregnancies.
Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Admiral General said men should be more open about their feelings.
“Instead of being told by society that men must be strong and not cry, through my music I want to be a voice that speaks on behalf of men to break the stigma,” he said.
Admiral General, who launched his musical career in 2019, is motivated by societal issues in his compositions.
“Sometimes I get lyrics when I am relaxed or in the middle of doing something. Some of the messages in my songs come from the stories I hear from other people,” he said.
One of his songs, Mwanangu, encourages acceptance of one’s situation in comparison to others. It denounces laziness while emphasising that people must stay in their lane and mind their own business.
The song also discourages people from pursuing worldly possessions to focus on what matters to make life worth living.
