A reboot of the hit crime drama series Prison Break is currently in the works, according to Deadline.
The media outlet revealed that Elgin James, best known for his work as the co-creator of the Sons Of Anarchy spinoff Mayans M.C., would be writing the new project, for which he will also serve as an executive producer.
Sources revealed that the new version of the show would not involve many of the original iteration's characters.
It was also reported that the series' main stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller are not expected to return for the reboot.
The new version of Prison Break will be set in the universe of the old program.
The reboot, which is currently in the early development stage, does not have a prospective release date.
The first of Prison Break's seasons made its debut on Fox on August 29, 2005.
The show was centered on a young man who attempted to prove the innocence of his incarcerated brother and to save him from death row by conducting an escape plan.
The cast of the program was led by Wentworth Miller and Purcell, who portrayed Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, respectively.
Performers such as Amaury Nolasco, Sarah Wayne Callies and Robert Knepper rounded out the cast of the program.
The program ran for three more seasons, and the last installment of its fourth set of episodes aired on May 15, 2009.
The show was followed up by a television film entitled Prison Break: The Final Break, which was released on May 27.
Prison Break was eventually brought back for a fifth season, which ran from April to May of 2017.
Much of the show's principal cast, including Miller and Purcell, returned for its continuation.
It was announced that executives from Fox intended to revive Prison Break for a sixth season in January of 2018.
However, the network's heads ultimately changed course, and it was confirmed that the project had been shelved the following year.
Miller confirmed that he had no plans to return to his old role as Michael Scofield in November of 2020.
According to Deadline, the performer stated that he did not 'want to play straight characters' in the future, and his decision was supported by both Purcell and Callies.
