RENOWNED multi-award-winning choral music group Chitungwiza Harmony Singers which had taken a two-year sabbatical from participating in local and international competitions are back from their extended break.
The group’s spokesperson Judith Gwande told NewsDay Life & Style that the trail-blazing group will be staging a performance at the Festival of Song set for December in Bulawayo.
“We are back from competition hibernation after a two-year break. Regionally, we last competed in 2019 at the Old Mutual Choir Festival and our last competition locally was at the Festival of Song in 2021,” she said.
“We stopped joining competitions because we believed that our choir was in an evolving stage and getting into competitions was not conducive at thatmoment.”
She said after a two-year break and COVID-19 induced layback, they have managed to restructure the choir and bring back the competitive mood associated with the choir.
“We managed to recruit new members who have brought a new sound we were looking for. The technical team led by Arnold Dzangare has managed to train the choir and they are happy with the sound,” she noted.
“The exciting part is that the choir became more flexible in terms of how it is now executing any kind of performance. So, on December 1 and 2, our choir, consisting of 60 choristers, will compete in the Community Choir Category at the Festival of Song in Bulawayo.”
Over the years, Chitungwiza Harmony Singers, known for its sweet harmonies, became one of the country’s most celebrated choral ensembles. They have participated and won at several local and international competitions.
