Zimdancehall awards turn to WhatsApp for voting

Awards organiser Blessing Hama, popularly known in the showbiz circles as Blexs Gyver.

ORGANISERS of the annual Zimdancehall Awards yesterday said they would be using social media platform WhatsApp for voting in an effort to accommodate as many voters as possible.

This year’s edition, broken into 25 categories, will be held under the theme: Taking Zimdancehall To Di World at a yet-to-be announced venue.

Awards organiser Blessing Hama, popularly known in the showbiz circles as Blexs Gyver, told NewsDay Life & Style that uplifting ghetto youths was the major driving force behind the honours.

“This year we are using WhatsApp for the voting process having realised that data might be expensive to a lot of ghetto youths to access our website or to vote using online platforms. We believe WhatsApp is the cheapest and easiest platform to use,” he said.

“We want to acknowledge each and everyone for their continued support for the genre. We are trying by all means to make sure we have covered almost every city or town with people supporting or doing Zimdancehall music.”

Blexs Gyver said their aim in hosting such an event was to make sure they fight for Zimdancehall legacy.

“We want to keep the genre alive since there are a lot of people fighting the movement. It has been four years of organising the Zimdancehall Awards and I promise this year we are going to bring glitz and glamour to the awards ceremony,” he said. “There are going to be loads of prizes to be won, such as laptops, cash and groceries among others.”

Blex Gyver encouraged youths to stay away from drugs and substance abuse.

“We have the biggest pandemic of drug abuse among the young people. Our advice is, please stay away from drugs. They are destroying our potential future,” he said.

The awards categories will include: Best Zimdancehall Male Artiste, Best Zimdancehall Female Artiste, Song of the Year, Best Zimdancehall Up-and-coming Artiste and Best Zimdancehall Riddim.”

Also, Best Helmets Artiste, Best Collaboration, People’s Choice Award, Most Influential Artiste, Best Male and Female DJ, Best Zimdancehall Producer, Best Zimdancehall Artiste in Diaspora/Outside Harare, Best Emce/Presenter, Best Album/EP/Singles Collection, Best Riddim, Best VideoDirector, Best Brand/Promoter Supporting Zimdancehall and Best Online Media will be honoured.
