The annual Matabeleland Cultural Awards (MCA) will be held on October 29 at the Bulawayo Art Gallery, organisers have said.
To be held under the theme The Renaissance and Sustenance of Our Culture, the awards are meant to preserve and showcase culture in the southern part of Zimbabwe.
Chairperson of the organisers Philani Ncube appealed to players from Matabeleland and Midlands to take charge of the awards to cement their relevance and preserve the legacy of the forefathers for future generations.
“Culture in this part of the country is not well recognised, all tribes have lost their culture according to my observation. At the awards, we will be honouring some of our cultural players for carrying the torch, we knew about them when we were very young and until now they are still standing,” he noted.
“We appreciate our sponsors who came on board this year and we will be happy to see them continuing to support the awards which are very important to our cultural players.”
Ncube said the cultural players would showcase traditional products and African dances.
“We usually organise Umthwentwe International Cultural Expo whereby cultural players from this part of the country can exhibit their work which include weaving, traditional cuisines, rural hut painting, traditional group dances, among others.
“The public is allowed to come and view products exhibited and traditional dances showcased during the expo.”

Launched in 2019, the awards mainly target traditional dance groups, carvers, maskandi, traditional regalia designers, traditional food cooks, Imbube, local indigenous language authors, rural hut painters, weavers, potters and poetry, among others.
