Afro-jazz musician Dereck Mpofu  recently rebranded as Yemukono in a move that is meant to harness the creative power while making strides in his career.

Popularly known as Green Ambassador, Mpofu who, swayed into the limelight with his hit Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe has also fostered environmental projects like the Green Concert and Cultural Fiesta among other programmes.

His other hits include Mari (Unonaka Iwe) and Ndinokakama (Hwiwu hwiwu).

Mpofu sees rebranding as a great tool to reinvent himself while it’s a time to come out with a new aspect of himself.

“I made the decision to do this as I creatively rebrand from my birth name and reintroduces myself to the public as Yemukono, a mere brand,” he said.

“I will now combine the characteristics of Dereck — the environmentalist and green ambassador, the defender of gender parity, and the ambassador for health — under the Yemukono qualities.

“Yemukono is in balance with the natural world, embracing our culture and the means by which it has been preserved, as well as the flora, animals, and wildlife.

“Since the Mhofu clan recognises Chiheras as equal to men, they support gender equality – ‘Dzese ndedzemukono’.

“Along with confidence since there will be more live performances on stage, it also incorporates love for oneself, one’s tribe, and one’s country.”

Mpofu’s use of music to communicate environmental and health issues has seen him travelling in Africa and beyond singing and presenting on such issues.

Yesterday, the musician performed at the Listen Musical Production in Malawi alongside Carmen Nelly, Albert Nyathi, Iyasa and G Malwezi.
