Mental Health: End of year reflections for mental wellbeing

As we celebrate our wins and mourn our losses it is important for us to take time to reflect to rest, recharge, and realign ourselves as part of maintaining our mental wellbeing.

Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a meaningful contribution to their community.

Mental health is a critical component of individual, family, community and national wellbeing and prosperity.

As we draw near the end of the year, many of us will be thinking about what we managed to achieve this year and also ruminating on what we failed to do.

Many of us often take time to dream, envision and set New Year resolutions but few take time to reflect as the year ends.

As we celebrate our wins and mourn our losses it is important for us to take time to reflect to rest, recharge, and realign ourselves as part of maintaining our mental wellbeing.

Why is it important to take time and reflect at the end of the year?

  1. Self-reflection can help us become more self-aware, aware of our experiences and the impact these have had on our way of thinking and perceiving the world
  2. Taking time to reflect also helps us to make sense of our life experiences and gain better mental clarity
  3. When we reflect over the past year we can learn from our experiences and grow as individuals
  4. Learning to self-reflect can help us become more mentally flexible and resilient as we face life’s challenges
  5. Self- reflection can help us become more intentional about how we live our lives
  6. Self-reflection can help us value the relationships we have with others

How do I conduct a 2023 self-reflection?

  1. Set aside some time
  2. Minimise distractions, disconnect from your digital technologies
  3. Be honest and authentic
  4. Decide on life areas that are of great value to you that you would want to reflect on. Examples can be personal relationships, career progress, spiritual growth, financial management.
  5. Consider what worked, what didn’t work, how you could continue to improve next year.

Self-reflection to consider as the year ends

  1. How have your grown as an individual this year?
  2. What experiences impacted you the most this year?
  3. What was your worst experience of this year? What did you learn from it?
  4. What was the best experience of this year? How can you intentionally create more of such experiences in the future?
  5. What were your greatest achievements this year?
  6. What were your greatest disappointments? How did you deal with them?
  7. What did you learn about yourself this year?
  8. Which of your relationships flourished this year, which relationships struggled?
  9. Who was part of your social and emotional support network this year, who did you receive help from and who did you provide help to this year? Who did you ‘do life’ with this year?
  10. Who was the most positive influence in your life this year and how can you strengthen that relationship?
  11. Who were some of the destructive influences in your life and what relationships do you need to consider changing to improve your mental wellbeing?
  12. What is the vision for your life, what was your vision for this year and are you still growing towards it?
  13. In what ways have you inspired someone else or encouraged someone else this year?
  14. In what ways have you made a meaningful impact on others this year?
