Four Harare residents appeared at the magistrate court on Friday charged with unlawful possession of ivory.

Four Harare residents appeared at the magistrate court on Friday charged with unlawful possession of ivory.

Ngoni Jira (30), Tichaona Mafusire(35), Estery Mafusire  (41)and Watson Kahombe (40) were remanded in custody to December 19 for routine remand and advised to approach High Court for bail.

Prosecutor Zebidiah Bofu alleged that on November 28 this year, officers from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit received information that the accused persons were in possession of raw ivory and were looking for potential buyers.

The detectives contacted Jira pretending to be buyers. They then met at Hellensville Shopping Centre in Borrowdale.

After the meeting, Jira directed the officers to Crowhill where they met Kahombe who was in possession of the raw ivory.

Jira and Kahombe were later arrested and they implicated their accomplices.

The ivory weighed 5.47 kilogrammes.
