A 20-year-old man from Lower Gweru was burnt to death after a butchery where he was employed caught fire last week.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the tragic incident. The incident happened at Mission Business Centre in Lower Gweru in the evening.

"The now deceased Leeroy Mpofu of Guduza village under Chief Sogwala in Lower Gweru was employed as a butchery attendant by Nkosana Sibanda, aged 45 at Mission business centre,” Mahoko said.

Mahoko said on the fateful day Darlington Mufundisi (28), who works at a neighbouring shop heard an explosion and some screams.

He said Mufundisi went outside and discovered that Sibanda's butchery was on fire with Mpofu trapped inside.

"He  alerted other people at the business centre and they tried to put out the fire but their efforts were in vain," he said.

He said police are carrying out investigations to determine what could have caused the fire.
