Pumula residents weary of break-ins

Speaking to Southern Eye, Mphadwe said  the neighbourhood watch teams would be divided into three groups to cover the whole ward.

BULAWAYO’S ward 19 councillor, Lazarus Mphadwe, has called for the formation of neighbourhood watch committees in Old Pumula following a spike in unlawful entry cases in the area.

Speaking to Southern Eye, Mphadwe said  the neighbourhood watch teams would be divided into three groups to cover the whole ward.

“I think we should form a neighbourhood watch committee that is Section A, B and C to cover the whole of Old Pumula. Each household shall pay a monthly fee of about a US$1 or US$2, that is yet to be decided,”Mphadwe said.

Recently, a Pumula resident lost hundreds of chickens to thieves.

The victim, Ruth Benere, said the thieves destroyed the fowl run walls and stole the chickens.

“It is when we heard the huge sound that we woke up and one of the elders looked through the window and noticed that the chickens were gone,” Benere said.

Mphadwe added that theft cases and robberies are exacerbated by malfunctioning tower lights plunging the area into darkness.
