A 42-YEAR-OLD Tsholotsho man has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly assaulting his 71-year-old mother.

Meluleki Ncube pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Mathew Mutiro last week.

He was, however, sentenced to 24 months in jail and six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour while 18 months were commuted to 630 hours of community service at Tshefunye Primary School.

The court heard that on March 20, 2022, Ncube’s mother was at her place of residence in Tsholotsho with Ncube’s wife and Gracious Mpofu.

Meluleki arrived home together with his brother Dumisani and two friends Sibusiso Ndlovu and Godwin Ncube. Meluleki, Dumisani and their friends left home for Tshefunye business centre in Tsholotsho before he returned and accused his mother of fomenting hatred between him and Dumisani after she forced him to disembark from the latter’s vehicle.

An alteration ensued between the two before Meluleki slapped his mother several times on the face.

He also struck his mother thrice with a wooden chair and only stopped when Mpofu intervened.

His mother sustained injuries to her back, hand and head as a result of the assault.
