POLICE in Bulawayo have expressed concern over a recent increase in car accidents on the province’s roads.
The concerns were raised after two separate road accidents claimed the lives of two people in Bulawayo.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the deaths were as a result of human error.
“We are investigating two cases of fatal road traffic accidents, where two lives were lost in Bulawayo. On June 13 at 4:45pm, a male adult aged 57 of Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, was driving an AsiaStar bus along Leopold Takawira Avenue with five passengers on board.
“He hit Gladys Ndlovu (65) of Pumula South, who was crossing the same road. As a result of the accident, she sustained an injury to the left foot and a cut on the forehead,” he said.
Ncube said Ndlovu was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital by a well-wisher where she died on admission.
“A police report was made and the cause of the accident was due to failure to keep a proper look out by the driver,” he said.
In another accident on the same day, a 27-year-old man from Norwood in Bulawayo was driving a Nissan Champ along Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue.

“He hit an unknown male adult aged approximately 35-40 years who was wearing black trousers and a white T-shirt. He was crossing Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue. As a result of the accident, the victim sustained serious head injuries and he died on the spot,” Ncube said.
“A police report was made and his body was conveyed to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem. The cause of the accident was failure to keep a proper look out by the driver.”
Ncube urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
Meanwhile, in a statement on Sunday, Falcon College chairperson of the board of governors Phillip Whaley confirmed the fatal accident involving one of their buses, which saw one of their students losing his life.
He identified the deceased as Aidan O’Donovan, adding that another student, Bradley Wentzel, suffered a broken arm and was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.
The college bus was involved in an accident at Danger Curves in Esigodini, Matabeleland South province, along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Highway on Sunday afternoon.
“It is with deepest sadness that I write to advise you of the passing of Aidan O’Donovan (Upper Sixth, Tredgold) in the bus accident this afternoon. There are no adequate words at a time like this and we are all deeply affected,” Whaley said.
“We have chartered a flight for Aidan’s parents and they are en route to Bulawayo now. There are a few children and staff with minor cuts and injuries. They are also admitted at Mater Dei Hospital.”
