TWENTY-TWO councillors were sworn in last week at Mangwe Rural District Council in Matabeleland South province, where the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) dominates the local authority with 13 seats.
Mangwe district co-ordinating committee chairperson Rorisang Makhurane said the councillors will hit the ground running this week.
“This is a historical occasion judging from the number of people who have come to witness the occasion and we really appreciate it,” Makhurane said.
“After the swearing-in ceremony, councillors will have to undergo a two-day training workshop. On Monday (today), we will have a meeting where councillors will have to choose the chairperson of the council and the committee chairs, then we will hand over business to the council.”
CCC councillors expressed confidence that they would land the chairperson’s post since they are the majority in the council.
Sources also indicated that ward 9 councillor Walter Ndlovu would land the chairmanship post after winning the seat for the third time in a row in last month’s harmonised elections.
Meanwhile, PF Zapu treasurer-general Francis Ndlovu said since the party won its first council seat in years, there was light at the end of the tunnel.
“The win is a sign of good things ahead for us. We have started planting by engaging the youth. Our councillor is a youth meaning that it is a seed meant for future generations,” he said.

Zapu councillor Mpendulo Ncube said the party was big and the umbrella of all the parties in Zimbabwe.
“When I came back from South Africa, I never thought it was going to be like this. I am overwhelmed by the trust you have given to me,” he said.
