GOVERNMENT has ordered the Municipality of Chinhoyi to re-do interviews for the chamber secretary post following reports of under-qualified councillors being part of the panellists.
In a letter signed by Local Government minister Daniel Garwe, the ministry directed that all advertisements should avoid clauses which restrict or limit selection pool to only those working at the local authority.
It said interviews should be carried out by a panel of professionals with the chairperson of the committee responsible for human resources matters as an observer member.
The Local Government board declined results from the local authority citing inconsistency and interference from councillors in the selection of candidates and the interview process.
Council spokesperson Tichaona Mlauzi confirmed the latest developments.
“Yes, I can confirm that a special council meeting was held last week, where the directive was read,” he said.
“Once all the necessary procedures have been taken, shortlisted candidates will be advised.”
Recently, the local authority came under fire from residents when it tried to suspend the now Administrative Court judge Justice Maxwell Kaitano, after he had advised council that land at Motocross on the road to Chinhoyi Showgrounds, was State land and thus could not be sold without requesting it from the parent ministry.
