Former Zim rugby boss Jani dies

The late former Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Aaron Jani

Former Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Aaron Jani has died aged 55.

Jani passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer of the colon.

He was elected the substantive ZRU president in 2017 following a vote of no confidence on the executive led by Nyararai Sibanda.

Jani served two terms until he was deposed by the current president Losson Mtongwiza in a closely contested election in May last year. In 2019, Jani was elected to the Rugby Africa executive committee and in 2023 he was elected treasurer of the continental rugby governing body.

In a statement, ZRU described Jani as a visionary leader who was passionate about the development of rugby.

“It is with profound sadness that the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) and the rugby community mourn the loss of our esteemed former President, Aaron Jani. His unwavering dedication during his tenure as ZRU President brought stability, growth, and pride to our community, leaving an indelible mark on the Sables, junior rugby, and women’s rugby development.”

Jani played for the Zimbabwe Sables from 1991 to 1997 before moving into administration. His leadership was instrumental in advancing rugby in Zimbabwe, leaving behind a legacy in the community.
