Baya’s The Taking heads for Harare

THE Taking, a satirical stage play by renowned playwright Raisedon Baya will soon be making its way to the capital.

THE Taking, a satirical stage play by renowned playwright Raisedon Baya will soon be making its way to the capital.

The play is a reconstruction of Zimbabwe’s history, focusing on the land issue; using song, dance, physical theatre and storytelling. It subtly touches on issues like Gukurahundi and the impact it left.

It navigates sensitively and intelligently through the turbulence of occupation, liberation war and the violent farm invasions dubbed “The Third Chimurenga”.

The author and creator of the drama, Baya said it also cleverly tackles issues of censorship and the role of storytelling in Zimbabwe.

“We are taking the play to Harare to the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre on November 16 although we will start with another show in Bulawayo on November 13. We anticipate a huge crowd and to have as much fun while educating and entertaining,” he said.

Baya said the city of Kings needs to be consistent in terms of support patterns.

“The Bulawayo Arts scene is very unpredictable. One moment it is vibrant and then the next there is little happening,” he said.

“But generally it’s a culturally rich city that really appreciates artistic work.

“The first show was great, well attended and the feedback was amazing.

“We have a product that we feel is relevant and speaks to important issues.

“Once the people resonate with the issues you can never go wrong.

“We hope to continue pushing the show everywhere and anywhere.”.

The show features an ensemble and stellar cast including Alex Ayanda Marowa, Zenzo Nyathi, Mzingaye Ngwabe, Lonesome Kudzai and Albert Tshuma.

It is directed by Memory Kumbota and written by Raisedon Baya.
