‘Heritage preservation at the core of Nyanga Arts Fest’

Josh Nyapimbi

The inaugural Nyanga Arts Festival in the Eastern Highlands will showcase not just arts disciplines but the beauty of the resort town.

The event produced and curated by Nhimbe Trust will take place from October 28-29.

Nhimbe Trust’s executive director Josh Nyapimbi said heritage preservation is at the core of the Nyanga Arts Festival.

“Nyanga Arts Festival is highly inclusive to uplift Zimbabwean cultural and arts practices while promoting and showcasing Nyanga as a tourist destination of choice," he said.

“The festival will be staged at two venues, the Montclair Hotel and Casino and Chief Saunyama’s homestead under the rallying theme: Cultural Heritage Tourism and Climate Change.”

Montclair Hotel’s general manager Brian Nyakutombwa said they look forward to receiving a big and mixed crowd.

"People are going to have a lot of fun.  It’s good for the industry, and for the people of Nyanga who will also benefit from all that traffic – those who have their wares, something to sell, a good opportunity to put up their market stalls and be ready to receive visitors,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority head of corporate affairs, Godfrey Koti said the festival will promote domestic tourism.

“It’s something that will assist us in showcasing our domestic tourism, especially the Eastern Highlands. There is quite a lot of attention on the destination and we are encouraging Zimbabweans from all walks of life to converge in Nyanga to witness the best that Nyanga has to offer.  Zimbabwe is indeed a multi-pronged destination that has arts and culinary activities to offer, as well as culture, the environment and adventure tourism.  This is the place for it,” he said.

On the cards are music performances, environmental theatre, visual arts, a Gota/Nhanga workshop and a Music Business workshop.

Other activities include Nyanga Cultural Heritage Tours, Nature, Birdwatching and Trout Fishing Tours –  with  Montclair Casino providing an added element of fun to the festival.

For musicians, the weekend starts on Thursday 27 October with a Music Business workshop facilitated by industry experts Melody Zambuko, Sam Mataure and Lisa Sidambe.

Musicians Jah Prayzah, Feli Nandi and MC Abisha Palme will headline the festival activities with performances on Saturday October 29.
