Caps fans demand Chitembwe exit

Sport

CAPS UNITED . . . . . . . . . . (0) 1

NGEZI PLATINUM . . . . . . . (1) 2

IT’S only five games into the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, but trouble is brewing at Caps United with fans demanding the removal of coach Lloyd Chitembwe.

The reason is that Caps United are already waist-deep in the relegation zone.

They have Bikita Minerals, Triangle and Chicken Inn for company.

Caps United have conceded the second-highest number of goals so far.

They are below Kwekwe United, who look hopeless at this stage.

Even ZPC Kariba, who have only scored one goal in five matches, are ranked higher than Caps.

The Green Machine are nowhere near where it wants to be.

Log leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars are a whole nine points ahead of Caps, after just five matches and as things stand, it looks more likely that it will get worse rather than getting better.

Yesterday's defeat was the third of the season for Caps after they surrendered points to Scottland and TelOne.

Ngezi Platinum Stars' Obriel Chirinda and Ashwin Karengesha's strikes in the 41st and 72nd minute, respectively, sandwiched an own goal by Gomezgani Chirwa (68th minute), which brought Caps back into the match.

Fanciful suggestions of a new technical team headed by Takesure Chiragwi have made the rounds on social media.

Club owner Farai Jere stated last year that Chitembwe would remain at Caps for as long as he wished.

According to the reports last week,  Chitembwe will be relegated to the less influential position of technical adviser.

Yesterday was another bad day for the Caps family after a second defeat on the trot.

It's slipping away way too early for the Caps United faithfuls' tolerance.

They are getting less than a point a game so far.

Yet this was a season that offered so much promise after a good transfer business.

“It was a very good game for the fans, an exciting game of football where I saw a lot of commitment from the players,” Chitembwe reflected after the match.

“Unfortunately, we came out of it bruised, the result did not match the performance. This was a result of mistakes we made after we scored a goal; I thought we could have done better. The moment they scored their goal, it was always going to be difficult, but the boys tried their best. We always try to play football the way it should be, but defensively, we were found wanting. It has been a big issue for us in recent matches. We have been conceding goals."

Caps have let in six goals so far this season.

"This is Caps, when results don't come, there is always a reaction. It's normal, I have been here long enough to understand that. It is my responsibility to make sure the team wins. So this has not gone down well with the fans, not only the fans, even the players and myself,  it has not gone down well with me. It's not going to get better; next week we play Highlanders,  so we go back to the drawing board and plan for the next game."

Highlanders are as yet unbeaten at home and yesterday, they forced a draw against Triangle on the road.
