
THE president of the Zimbabwe Karate Federation (ZKF), Joe Rugwete, has been appointed secretary of the Union Des Federations Africaines De Karate (UFAK) Disciplinary and Legal Commission with immediate effect.
UFAK president Souleymane Gaye wrote to Rugwete in a letter dated March 17 informing him of his appointment into the continental body, which is a massive endorsement of the sport in the country.
“It is a mixed bag of gratitude and happiness under which I announce to you the official appointment of Joe Rugwete, as the secretary of the UFAK Disciplinary and Legal Commission. Your appointment is effective immediately,” he said.
“The composition of UFAK Legal and Disciplinary Commission is as follows: Cheick Conde (Guinea) — chairman, Joe Rugwete (Zimbabwe) — secretary, Louis Ondongo (Congo) - member and Freddy L’Akombo (Democratic Republic of Congo) - member.
“We congratulate you on your new responsibility and wish you every success in this position.”
Rugwete was delighted with this latest appointment, which he feels is a testament of the growing influence of Zimbabwe karate on the African stage.
“I am deeply honoured to be appointed the secretary for the UFAK Disciplinary and Legal Commission,” he said.
“This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the growing influence of Zimbabwean karate on the continental stage and also presents an opportunity to further elevate the standards of karate in Zimbabwe.

“It allows us to contribute to the development of fair play, integrity, and discipline within the sport, both locally and intentionally.”
Added Rugwete: “I am committed to using this platform to advocate for the growth of karate in Zimbabwe, ensuring our athletes and officials are well-represented and supported at all levels.”
Meanwhile, it is an action-packed year for ZKF with events such as the Harare Open, Panda Karate championships, AUSC Region South Karate Championship and the St John’s Emerald Hill Interschools Karate Championships set to take place in April, May and June.
