All set for the 3rd CABS Candidates Chess Tournament

The 2024 edition of the annual chess tournament is scheduled to run from December 5 – 8, 2024.

All is now in place for the staging of the third edition of the CABS Candidates Chess Tournament which is set to take place at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo next week.

The 2024 edition of the annual chess tournament is scheduled to run from December 5 – 8, 2024.

Sponsored by CABS Bank, the tournament not only provides a competitive platform for chess players, but also represents a significant step towards decentralising chess events in Zimbabwe, moving them beyond the traditional venue of Harare, according to Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF).

“The decision to host the tournament in Bulawayo for the third consecutive year underscores a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This shift has several important implications. First, it facilitates increased participation, as players from Bulawayo and the surrounding areas can now compete without the logistical challenges and costs associated with traveling to Harare. This change encourages greater involvement from local talent,” ZCF said in a statement.

“Second, the tournament serves as a vital platform for local players to showcase their skills. Competing against established players elevates their experience and expertise, helping them to grow in their chess journey. Lastly, the tournament features sections specifically designed for younger players, including the Under 16 Prestige and Under 16 Development sections.

“This emphasis on youth engagement encourages the next generation to participate in chess, helping to cultivate essential skills such as critical thinking and strategic planning while steering them away from crime and drug abuse,” added ZCF.

This year's tournament will feature four distinct sections namely the Open section which includes to all players, the Ladies section, the Under 16 Prestige section and Under 16 Development section aimed at fostering skills among younger players.

The winner of the Open section and the Ladies Section earn an invitation to the national championship.

ZCF vice-president and the tournament organiser Elvis Shora gave an update on the preparation for the tournament.

“Registration is already underway, and we are thrilled to see such a strong interest from players across the region. We are preparing for a fantastic turnout this year, and we remain committed to making this tournament a memorable experience for all participants.

“It’s not just about competition; it’s about building a vibrant chess community and providing our youth with positive opportunities that keep them engaged and away from crime and drug abuse,” he said.
