CHAPUNGU Queens

CHAPUNGU Queens beat Black Rhinos Queens 2-0 in a Heart Women Soccer League rescheduled week 24 fixture to move into second place at The Heart Stadium in Waterfalls, Harare, yesterday as the title race heats up.

Natasha Ndowa and Edline Mutumbami scored for the Air Force of Zimbabwe side in the first half as the ground soldiers Rhinos bit the dust.

Ndowa scored with a dipping long range shot, while Mutumbami headed in the second for Chapungu, off a lovely assist by Nobukhosi Ncube.

The win by Waru Waru saw them leapfrog their opponents Rhinos into second place with 70 points, one behind log leaders and Herentals Queens.

Rhinos are in third place on 68 points, all teams having played 26 matches and four remaining before the season comes to an exciting end.

Meanwhile, Black Rhinos Queens veteran stars had earlier rediscovered their Rio magic, contributing heavily to Saturday’s 18-goal demolition of MSU Queens at the Heart Stadium.

Felistas “Figo” Muzongondi, the former Zimbabwe women’s soccer captain, netted six times, two in the first half and four after the break with her sixth and final coming in at 90 minutes.

Rutendo “Madzimai” Makore, who also dazzled the scene as a Mighty Warriors striker, showed her class by scoring four goals, achieving a hat-trick in the first half and her last goal after 66 minutes.

Not to be outdone was midfield maestro Mavis Chirandu, who grabbed a brace, scoring in the 10th and 78th minutes of the game, while Daisy Kaitano also registered her name on the scoresheet with a goal in the 89th minute.

All the four represented Zimbabwe at the Rio Summer Olympics in Brazil in 2016 and still continue to punch above their waists in The Heart Women Soccer League.

Rhinos Queens’ Caroline Mangwai opened the floodgates scoring in the third minute, while Makore found the back of the net two minutes later, with Muzongondi making it 3-nil with her first goal after eight minutes.

Panashe Ganje scored a brace inside three minutes, her first goal coming in the 22nd minute and the second three minutes later, while Takunda Munawera also scored a brace inside two minutes with her goals scored in the 75th and 76th minute. In Bulawayo, Highlanders Royals beat Sheasham Gweru Queens 3-1 at Highlanders Club House.

Royals Patience Ndlovu opened the scoring after 13 minutes, Thando Sibanda increased the tally after 24 minutes, while Mitchell Guri got the hosts’ last goal in the 34th minute before Sheasham pulled one back from the spot deep into stoppage time.

Herentals Queens dismissed Maningi Youth Soccer Academy 2-0 at Alexandra Sports Club in Harare, with the reigning champions getting their goals through Natasha Benza in the first half and Melody Chikore 10 minutes from full time.
