Handball teams gear up for national club championships

ALL is set for an exciting handball national club championships which are set to kick off tomorrow at Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza.

The top teams, from five regional leagues, have qualified for the event which is set to conclude on Sunday.

The five major regional leagues include the Northern Region League (Harare), Southern Region League (Bulawayo), Eastern Region League (Masvingo), Central Region League (Midlands) and the Manicaland Region League.

These leagues battle it out within their regions to determine their best.

The top teams will then meet at the national level to battle the best of every region.

Thirteen teams have already secured their spot in the national championship tournament.

“The club championship will have top teams from each regional league for both male and female namely Northern Region three teams, Southern Region three teams, Central Region two teams, Eastern Region two, to make them a total of 10 per category,” Zimbabwe Handball Federation secretary-general Edison Chirowodza said.

Every year, the elite teams meet and battle it out at the national championship tournament to determine the best in the country and the winners will represent Zimbabwe at the ZONE VI Super Cup, which the country is hosting next month.

“The Super Cup will feature top teams from Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia and the host Zimbabwe,” he said.

The national championship tournament is expected to draw a large crowd and showcase the country’s top handball talent.
