Wallace happy with progress on golf course

Michael Wallace

One of the country’s top amateur golfers Michael Wallace has expressed satisfaction at his development since dropping out of college in the US to pursue his golf career earlier this year.

Wallace has competed in Manicaland Amateur, Chapman Grand Slam and Zimbabwe Amateur Championship as well as in other tournaments in South Africa.

The budding golfer is currently taking a short break after taking part at the Zimbabwe Amateur where he failed to defend his title.

“I am definitely happy with how I have been playing. I didn’t play too well at the Chapman Grand Slam but I played well in South Africa where I finished second shooting 5 – under so I am going back to the drawing board for the next couple of months and see what we can do to improve,” Wallace said.

“I am taking a short break after the Zim Amateur and I might play Roland Park and also go and play the Ekurhuleni Open Golf Tournament in South Africa,” he added.

Wallce joined Midland College in Texas last year but has decided to take another route for his golf career and is looking to turn pro in the next two years.

“It feels very good (to be back home). I was in America so now I am just focused on my golf and maybe I am going to turn pro in about two years. But it feels really good to be back. Hopefully I will turn pro and as I said for the next two years, I will be playing golf in South Africa and in Zimbabwe,” Wallace said after his first tournament back in Zimbabwe, the Manicaland Amateur in June where he was also the defending champion

Last year, Wallace had a brilliant season on the local amateur circuit where he won the Dugmore Trophy, the Manicaland Amateur and Zimbabwe Amateur championship.

He was runner up at the Manicaland Amateur behind winner Vincent Chidambazina while he was second again at Zim Amatuer after teenager Keegan Shutt won the event.

And at Hillside Golf Club last weekend he had a bad start but improved with each passing round.
