Billiat makes Warriors’ case

Sport
Billiat retired from international football back in 2021 following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

Former Warriors star Khama Billiat continues to show that he is far from being spent  force and could make an invaluable contribution to the national team cause after shooting to the top of the goal scoring charts with his  eighth goal of the season in 2-0 victory over Bikita Minerals in a Castle Heart Stadium yesterday.

Billiat retired from international football back in 2021 following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The nimble footed forward struggled in his final year at Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa before trekking back home at the start of the season to resurrect his career or probably end it in Zimbabwe.

But his performance has seen calls for him to return to the national team fold grew louder especially as the Warriors continue to struggle on the international scene.

Billiat was rumoured to be on his way back ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in June but the challenge remains that he is yet to announce his availability for the country.

Yadah FC owner Walter Magaya has been on record saying that he will try to convince Billiat to come out of retirement.

The Warriors are set to play in the 2025 Afcon qualifiers beginning in September but Zifa is yet to appoint a new coach amid reports that they have settled for former Cameroon coach Winfred Schafer who lifted the African crown with the Indomitable Lions in 2002.

Zifa were expected to announce the new coach this weekend and Schafer is understood to be the preferred choice with former Warrior fullback Goerge Mbwando, who is based in german tipped to be his assistant along with Takesure Chiragwe and Tembo Chuma.

However,  Billiat’s forem will certainly give the new technical team something to think about ahead of the Afcon qualifiers as well the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

Zimbabwe has opened the door to a lot of young talent most of them born in the UK but they lack the guidance to produce the desired results.

The Aces Youth Academy graduate found the back of the net in the 72nd minute, when he fired home from close range after being released by Ryan Ncube in the match against Bikita Minerals.

Blessed Ndereki put the final nail on the Bikita coffin when he scored Yadah’s second in the 89th minute.

Billiat is now the joint top goal scorer with CAPS United’s William Manondo whose team is in action today.
