THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) has expressed sadness over the passing on of Falcon College rugby player Aidan O’Donovan in a bus accident on Sunday.
O’Donovan died when the school bus veered off the road and landed on its side approximately 20km from the school’s campus.
In a statement, ZRU president Losson Mtongwiza said the union was mourning the loss and offering unparalleled support to Falcon College and the O’Donovan family during this difficult time.
“ZRU would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to Falcon College and the O’Donovan family on the tragic loss of Aidan O’Donovan in the bus accident,” Mtongwiza said.
“As the union, we commiserate with Falcon College and the O’Donovan family in this very difficult time and wish all students and staff that have been injured a speedy recovery and more importantly, peace and comfort during this period. May you find strength and comfort in each other and in the cherished memories of Aidan.”
Falcon College chairperson of the board of governors, Phillip Whaley on Sunday broke the news of the accident and the passing of O’Donovan.
“Dear Falcon parents and guardians, following the initial communication sent out, it is with deepest sadness that I write to advise you of the passing of Aidan O’Donovan (Upper Sixth, Tredgold) in the bus accident this afternoon (Sunday),” Whaley wrote.
“There are no adequate words at a time like this, and we are all deeply affected. We have chartered a flight for Aidan and Lana’s parents, and they are en route to Bulawayo now. Please keep the O’Donovan family and everyone who loved Aidan in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

“Bradley Wentzel suffered a broken arm and is at the Mater Dei hospital in Bulawayo with his parents. There are a few children and staff with minor cuts and injuries. They are also at the Mater Dei being treated and checked out.”
Administrators of one of the local Facebook rugby pages said O’Donovan was a delight to watch.
“May Aidan O’Donovan’s spirit rest in everlasting peace. He was a beacon to his peers, a candle in the wind. A marvel to watch on the field of play,” they posted.
