The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) is set to host the Baldmin Holdings (Costar Takawira Mangwende) first leg Triangular series at the National Sports Stadium next weekend as it prepares athletes for upcoming international competitions.
The event, which has an entry fee of US$2 per athlete, will offer track events — short, middle and long distance — and field events including shotput, long jump and discus.The organisers said they pencilled the event at the start of the year to prepare athletes for the African Games which will be hosted by Ghana in March.
NAAZ president Tendai Tagara said the association is expecting a huge turnout from athletes across the country so that they can have an opportunity to assess their level of preparedness for the upcoming Games.
“We are happy that Mr Takawira, the director of Baldmin Holdings, has seen fit to partner us this year and support this event. “The preparations for the event are well on course and we are expecting all top runners across the country for track and field events to grace the occasion and battle for honours.
“The organising committee has already been put in place headed by the hosts, Harare province, with the highest qualified NAAZ officials already booked for the event,” said Tagara.“We deliberately put the event on January 27 to use it as a preparation for the African Games that will take place in Ghana at the beginning of March. Most of our local athletes will be vying for good times.”
NAAZ has an action-packed calendar this year with the second leg of this event expected in April.
