HIGHLANDERS coach Baltemar Brito has batted away pressure from his side saying at the beginning of the season no one gave them a chance of winning the league title but the Bulawayo giants now look good to end a 17-year dry spell.
Bosso are the team to beat in the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season so far after having gone 16 games without defeat, collecting 34 points.
After beating third-placed Manica Diamonds at Barbourfields Stadium at the weekend, they hit the road to Baobab to face second-placed Ngezi Platinum Stars, who are eager to close the gap as they have 30 points in second place.
Going into the last game of the first half of the season on Sunday, Brito says he is enjoying the moment and concerned with thorough preparations for the next game.
“We are not worried and we are not feeling any pressure because our intentions are based on preparing for the next match with the maximum seriousness, and the boys are doing it. We know that there are things that we need to develop in our game to win against the other team. We want to improve on the performance of last season when we finished fifth. No one in the beginning of the season considered us as one of the contenders for the championship, therefore we are not under pressure. We are just here to enjoy this moment,” Brito said.
Vice-captain and central defender Peter Muduhwa was on target on Sunday when the Bulawayo giants edged Manica Diamonds, and goals coming from defenders has become a feat synonymous with Highlanders.
Highlanders last won the league title in 2006 under the guidance of Methembe Ndlovu and their closest to the title after that was under Zambian gaffer Kelvin Kaindu, who went on a 23-match unbeaten run in 2012 only to be overpowered by Dynamos at the end of the season.
