Zim scoops medals at Junior champs

Medal

ZIMBABWE has scooped two medals in discus and shortput at the ongoing Confederation of African Athletics Under-18 and Under-20 championships in Zambia.

The event started on Saturday and ends tomorrow at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

From a total of 50 athletes fielded by the National Athletics Association on Zimbabwe (NAAZ) for both categories, the duo of Kimberly Kachambwa and Rodney Ngezimani has so far managed to make it to the podium.

Kachambwa bagged a silver medal for the Under-18 women discus, while Ngezimani scooped a bronze medal in the men’s Under-20 shot put category.

Team coach Brian Nhubu expressed happiness with the athletes’ performance so far and hopes that those who are yet to compete will be able to clinch more medals.

“All our Under-18 and Under-20 boys and girls for 100m managed to proceed to semi-finals. Denzel Siasimulela and Samukeliso Ndebele, however, eventually lost in the finals,” said Nhubu.

“We continue to appreciate our athletes for managing to stand up to the competition and managing to proceed up to the finals considering the competition they are currently facing. Generally, our performance is good so far and we still have hope of accruing more medals,” he said.

NAAZ president Tendai Tagara challenged the athletes to at least proceed to the semis and finals, something which the athletes have since managed to achieve.

The 200m and 800m field events, hurdles and relays are some of the events that are yet to take place.
