Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) has revealed that some foreign teams will be participating in this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe Open Table Tennis championships set for Divaris Makaharis School in Harare this weekend.
The ZTTU flagship event will take place from April 29 to 30 as athletes challenge for top honours in the singles and doubles competitions.
ZTTU president Noah Ferenando, who is expecting fireworks at the event this time around, made the revelations about the foreign contingent taking part in the competition.
“I am excited that we are hosting our Zim Open Championship on April 29 and 30. It’s quite important that we have actually managed to spread our wings to attract teams from Zambia and Malawi that are going to be participating. Zambia and Malawi have confirmed participation and we have made it attractive through prize money,” Ferenando said.
“This is the biggest tournament on our national calendar and it has ranking points which contribute to the national selection as it is based on points. We hope this event will help prepare our teams for the upcoming Southern Region World Cup qualifiers to be hosted by Botswana.
“We would like to thank our partners for coming in with prizes for the athletes. The Chinese community in Zimbabwe has been instrumental in the development of these games and the sport at large. Talks are underway that in July we will send four players to China for a training camp to prepare them for podium performance.
“All is set for the event and we invite all Zimbabweans to come and support the sons and daughters of the soil,” he added.
Sponsors for the competition include Chakaz, Divaris Makaharis School, Nashenic Freight Services, Huatai Batteries, Old Mutual and Devine International.
