World Boxing Council (WBC) Interim Superbantam weight champion Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire missed out on an opportunity to become the WBC superbantam weight title holder after she lost her bout against Yamileth Mercado in Mexico yesterday.
The fight took place yesterday in Chihuahua, Mexico with Chiwandire losing 97-93 on points in a 10 round bout.
Though postponement of the fight seemed be the best option due to travel challenges faced by Chiwandire and her team, the much-awaited fight was, however, given the greenlight to proceed.
The team landed in Chihuahua City less than 24 hours before the fight.
Though the Zimbabwean superstar boxer had little time to acclimatise in Mexico before the fight, the result clearly shows her resilience under tough circumstances. Her marketing manager Eric Kandiwa said the challenges they faced gave them some lessons..
He also commended Chiwandire on her bravery and resilience.
“It would not be logically possible to postpone the date especially when there were broadcasters and sponsors lined up. Maybe we would need to learn from this in terms of how we seek assistance in getting visas sorted at government to government level,” said Kandiwa.
“With that said, Kuda has shown great resilience against all odds. She has shown great character and is a great champion.”
