Nac golf tourney boosts cancer organisations

THE National Aids Council (Nac) HIV and Cancer Prevention Drive Pro-Am golf tourney, which ended on Friday at Royal Harare Gold managed to raise funds for four local cancer service organisations in the country.

Island Hospice & Healthcare, Kidzcan Zimbabwe, HOSPAZ and the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe received cheques amounting to US$6000 during the prize giving ceremony on Friday night.

Professional golfer Robson Chinhoi won the seventh edition of the tournament following a playoff victory over Visitor Mapwanya.

The duo, who have been playing some quality golf in recent weeks, were tied on 11-under-par 205 on the third and final round of the competition on Thursday.

Stuart Krog was third on 9 - Under with Pride Sembo a shot behind and Mohammed Mandhu completed the top five, eight strokes behind the leaders.

Defending champion Ricky Hendler from South Africa was tied for sixth on two-under along with Ghana-based Zimbabwean golfer Biggy Chibvuri.

Top female golfer Claire Minter was the ladies champion after grossing 242 in three rounds and tied for 50th place overall as Davison Elijah won the seniors’ category while Tariro November was the highest placed amateur golfer.

“The objective of the golf tournament is to raise a minimum of US$60 000 to procure cancer medicines and equipment for organisations that are fighting cancer in different capacities. The organisations are Island Hospice & Healthcare. KIDZCAN, Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, HOSPAZ and Zimbabwe Cancer Registry," Nac board vice-chairman Phillip Francis said in a speech read on behalf of chairperson Margaret Mehlomakhulu.

The tournament, which saw over 100 professional and amateur golfers take part also aims to raise awareness on HIV and cancer prevention among golfers and general public while providing a platform to market products and services.

The objective of the golf tournament is to raise a minimum of US$60 000 to procure cancer medicines and equipment for organisations that are fighting cancer in different capacities.

Key sponsors Southern Skies Medical also donated a drugs trolley which was handed over to Island Hospice and Healthcare.

Nac will also sponsor the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Open later this year after they invested US$34 000 in the event last year.
