BY METHEMBE SIBANDA EIGHT people died, while a dozen others were injured in separate accidents in Bulawayo and Harare Tuesday morning.
In Bulawayo, six people died while 11 others were injured when an illegal commuter omnibus rammed into a truck at the intersection of Masiyephambili and Khami roads.
The kombi was trapped between the truck’s horse and trailer and dragged for about 30 metres.
In Harare, two people died when a commuter train heading in the direction of Ruwa rammed into a Honda Fit at a rail crossing near OK Mart in Hillside.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accidents saying: “Six people died while 11 others were injured. A non-Zupco Toyota Hiace kombi with 17 occupants went through a red robot and collided with another vehicle near Nkulumane Shopping Complex.”
The deceased and the injured were ferried to United Bulawayo Hospitals.
Nyathi said the Harare accident caused a traffic jam on Chiremba Road.
Passengers Association of Zimbabwe president Tafadzwa Goliati urged motorists to observe traffic rules and regulations.

“We are losing lives daily because of certain drivers who are not respecting road regulations. We urge motorists to be patient and exercise extreme caution on road intersections,” Goliati said.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe recently launched a campaign targeting motorists to reduce road carnage, saying most accidents were a result of human error.
73 people died during the Easter and Independence Day holidays.
