AS Independence Day is approaching Zimbabwe is “supposedly “celebrating its 45 years of Independence on the 18th of April from the colonial rule. After a protracted liberation fight spearheaded by numerous political movements and individuals, such as Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe, the nation attained independence on the 18th of April 1980.
Zimbabwe still had to deal with societal problems, economic hardships, and political unrest after attaining independence.
Emmerson Mnangagwa took over, as President following the 2017 military coup that deposed Zimbabwe’s long-time leader, Robert Mugabe, who had been in power since the country’s independence in 1980.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Zanu-PF government have not fulfilled their commitments to end Robert Mugabe’s human rights violations. Zimbabwean citizens still, continue to face extreme unemployment and high rates of inflation, just as they did at the close of the Mugabe regime.
Under Mnangangwa governance, Zimbabwe has gone from bad to worse. There has been social and economic instability, a collapse of the rule of law, and ill-treatment for human rights during President Emmerson Mnangangwa’s leadership.
A prime example of the consequences of a party continuing to dominate the country and abusing its power. There is no democracy in Zimbabwe, Mnangangwa and his government, suppresses the voices of the citizens of Zimbabwe.
Hence, Zimbabwe is still not independent, and there is absolutely nothing to celebrate for on Independence Day.
