Teen jailed for burglary

A 19-year-old boy from Hurungwe has been convicted burglary and theft charges after stealing some groceries from a local shop.

Hardlife Tomu of Nyama village under Chief Kazangarare appeared at the Karoi Magistrates Court facing a charge of unlawful entry.

Prosecutors proved that Tomu broke into the complainant’s shop on January 9 after smashing a window  pane using a stone to gain entrance.

While inside, he stole an assortment of groceries.

Tomu was arrested three days later following a tip-off.

He was sentenced to 10 months in jail, of which four months were suspended for five years.

A further two months were suspended on condition that he pays restitution.

He will serve an effective four months in prison.
