Money changer jailed 12 months

News
The convict Peter Rusere (34) was facing allegations of contravening Exchange Control Act.

HARARE provincial magistrate Ruth Moyo last week convicted a money changer and sentenced him to prison.

The convict Peter Rusere (34) was facing allegations of contravening Exchange Control Act.

He was sentenced to 12 months in jail, five months of which were suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offense in the next five years.

He will serve seven months in jail.

Prosecutors said on September 18 this year, detectives who were under operation targetting illegal money change approached Rusere with US$100 trap money.

The court heard that the detectives wanted the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.

Rusere agreed at an exchange rate of US$1:ZiG20 , and transferred ZiG800 into an Ecocash account, which was supplied by the detectives.

Rusere was subsequently arrested.
