Christmas beerdrink ends in violence

News
Machazera appeared before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje on Thursday facing attempted murder charges.

A Harare man severely assaulted his friend with a knobkerrie, leaving him for dead after accusing him of stealing his phone.

The incident happened on Christmas eve at Harare Gardens where Wellington Machazera (49) from Kuwadzana was drinking beer with his unnamed friend.

Machazera appeared before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje on Thursday facing attempted murder charges.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti alleged  that on December 24  at around 8pm,  Machazera was drinking beer with his friends before the misunderstanding.

Machazera later accused his friend of stealing his cell phone, and before he could reply, the accused person attacked him with a knobkerrie, leaving him unconscious.

He was ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital where was admitted.

Fellow imbibers effected a citizen's arrest on Machazera and handed him over to the police.
