A KAROI cop has been arraigned before the courts over allegations of raping a gender-based violence victim.

Shakemore Muzanechita (50), a constable based at Karoi Urban, was not asked to plead when he appeared before Karoi magistrate Godswill Mavenge on May 29.

A ruling on his bail application was set for today.

Muzanechita, whose police force number is 049493K, was represented by Unite Saize of Saize and Associates.

The complainant is a married woman aged 30.

State prosecutor Pazvichaenda Munakira told the court that at around 8pm last Thursday, the complainant visited Karoi Urban Police Station with a view to reporting a domestic violence case against her husband.

She reported the case to the accused, who was manning the charge office.

It is further alleged that instead of recording the matter, Muzanechita took the complainant to her house in order to arrest the husband, but they failed to locate him.

Munakira said they then decided to look for the victim’s husband at Hwata business centre.

While on the way, Muzanechita allegedly proposed love to the complainant, who turned him down.

He then dragged the complainant to a bushy area near Tafara Primary School in Chiedza and raped her once.

She tried to stop him by telling him that she was HIV positive, but Muzanechita said he did not care, adding that he would use a condom.

After the rape, the cop allegedly asked the complainant to accompany him to his residence in Chikangwe suburb, but she refused saying that she had left her children alone at home.

The next morning, the complainant told her co-tenant about the matter and she was advised to make a police report.

Karoi Urban police officers went to the scene of the crime in the bushy area, where they found a used condom.

During the investigations, it was also discovered that her domestic violence complaint had not been recorded by Muzanechita.
