A 23-YEAR-OLD knife-wielding armed robber who operated behind the Beitbridge Prison complex has been jailed for eight years.
Regional magistrate Charity Maphosa suspended six months from Gerald Gumbodete’s sentence on conditions he restitutes R300 which was not recovered when he was arrested for robbing Avant Mugweva.
Police recovered R2 500 when they arrested Gumbodete.
The court heard that Gumbodete on November 10 last year at around 6pm was in his hunting ground behind the Beitbridge Prison when he saw Mugweva approaching from the opposite direction.
Gumbodete, who was wearing a balaclava, drew an Okapi knife and charged towards Mugweva who sensed danger and wrestled the armed robber.
Gumbodete stabbed Mugweva five times on the hands, legs and face.
He then robbed Mugweva of his I-phone 6 and another phone from his trouser pocket.
Gumbodete fled with the two phones and Mugweva went to report the case to the police with a blood-stained knife.

A couple of days later, detectives nabbed Gumbodete of 1972 Two Rooms Section of Dulibadzimu high-density suburb who helped them to recover the I-phone from Phinias Muleya who had bought it.
