Drones used to police border

South Africa’s Border Management Authority says it has been using drones along the Beitbridge border

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) says it has been using drones along the Beitbridge border with Zimbabwe to help curb illegal migration.

BMA assistant commissioner Nkhuliseni Lushengo told Sabc that they had been using drones since the beginning of the festive season as well as body cams.

Lushengo said the use of drones had seen them intercepting a  high number of people, who were using illegal crossing points.

He said at one point they intercepted 75 people in onder day.

“It includes the number of people using these vulnerable areas or these passages to pass through going to Zimbabwe and also come to South Africa to either buy some products or something they are going to sell that other side of Zimbabwe,” Lushengo said.

Thousands of people used the Beitbridge border post to cross to South Africa as well as Zimbabwe during the festive season.
