Haulage trucks wreak havoc in CBD

Bulawayo residents have urged the city council to limit the movement of haulage trucks in the central business district, which are blamed for the deterioration of roads and noise pollution.

Bulawayo United Residents Association chairperson, Winos Dube, said there was need to enforce city by-laws that limit the movement of certain types of vehicles..

“We are seeing these heavy trucks and we have kept quiet,” Dube said. “Of course our expectations are for these trucks to move on the outskirts of the city and this is why we have roads such as Cecil Drive and Masiyephambili Drive for trucks carrying goods through the city to other destinations.

“Joshua Mqabuko Street has been classified as a highway so I am not sure what the city's by laws say on heavy trucks operating on highways.”

Council spokesperson Nesisa Mpofu had not responded to inquiries from Southern Eye on Sunday on the matter at the time of going to print.
