TSHOLOTSHO Rural District Council in Matabeleland North province has dismissed claims that it is forcing every household in the district to pay a R100 levy.
The claims were made by a village head in Tsholotsho South recently.
Speaking to Southern Eye, a villager said village heads were told to advise communities that they should pay at least R100 per year, but were not informed of the purpose of the so-called tax.
“The RDC wants each household to pay R100 tax per year,” the villager said.
“This is against what we fought for in the liberation struggle as we didn’t want such taxes during the time of Rhodesia.”
However, Tsholotsho RDC chief executive Nkululeko Sibanda said the money was not tax, but a development levy of US$3 or R50.
“Sixty percent of the development levy goes towards the community development projects they want, while 40% goes to the council administration,” he said.
Sibanda said he was not aware of the collection of the alleged revenue from the villagers, adding that bank accounts were opened for all 22 wards for them to access the funds for development projects.
